Microsoft Touchscreen Technology |
One of the Ph.D. students at CCVCL forward me a link yesterday about Microsoft's work for smartphones. They are developing touchscreen technology for mobile devices that
will be able to provide different sensations based on what you're
tapping. In other word, you are going to have a FeelScreen instead of just TouchScreen!
Interestingly, this is exactly the project I am working on right now at CCVCL! Last year, one of the students in my Calculus class is visually impaired. It's quite challenging to learn Calculus without being able to "see" all the graphs in real time while the lesson proceeds. I was dreaming to build a touchscreen display which will give visually-impaired students instant access to the rich 2D information trough their fingertips.

An unbelievable opportunity was coming to me near the end of last semester. I was invited to apply and participate in an NSF-founded summer research program about Assistive Technology. Amazingly, I am able to do some research topics which are interesting and relevant to me.
Currently, I am busy designing and testing circuits for my "Haptic Interface" (same idea as Microsoft's), and writing an iPad App for user haptic feedback evaluation. The summer is so short, and the program is ending in two weeks! Hopefully, I can finish the project and getting a working prototype.
